If you’re a first-time truck buyer considering purchasing a Dodge Ram, you’ll need to decide whether the 1500 or the 2500 is the truck for you. Both models have the reliability and strength the Ram name is built upon, but the 2500 is more appropriate for heavy-duty use that average truck drivers may not need.

The Ram 1500 can carry nearly a ton and can tow 10,450 lbs. This capacity is sufficient for most regular truck owners. The Ram 2500 has greater payload and towing capacity, making it more appropriate for commercial use. The Ram 2500 has a towing capacity of 18,350 lbs. and can carry 3,170 lbs.

The trims also have differing engine and drivetrains available. The Ram 1500 offers a 3.6 liter Pentastar V6, a 5.7 liter HEMI or a 3.0 liter EcoDiesel engine. The Ram 2500 offers higher performance engines – a 5.7 liter HEMI, a 6.4 liter HEMI or a 6.7 liter Cunnins Turbo Diesel. The higher performance engines of the Ram 2500 will cost the owner more in fuel and service expenses over the life of the vehicle, however.

When choosing between the Ram 1500 and the Ram 2500, the decision will likely come down to the tasks you’ll be employing the vehicle for. For day-to-day truck use, the Ram 1500’s towing and payload capacity should well exceed the average driver’s needs. If you’re in need of a heavy duty truck for commercial construction or hauling, the Ram 2500 will provide the performance and reliability you need.
