Chrysler’s marriage to Fiat continues to produce innovation in auto design, as the automobile manufacturer recently announced that the next generation of Jeep Wranglers may be made from aluminum, rather than their traditional steel frame. New Jersey Jeep enthusiasts will be able to find the next generation of Wrangler Jeeps at their local Butler Jeep dealership when the vehicles hit the market around 2017.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne said that the move may help in efforts to reduce Wrangler engine sizes but retain speed and performance. A lighter body would also help Jeep more easily meet federal fuel efficiency requirements. Tightening fuel requirements are pushing automakers to improve their average fuel efficiency, resulting in redesigns of many popular vehicles, including the Wrangler.
Building the new Wrangler from aluminum would necessitate moving production from its Toledo plant, but Jeep is committed to keeping that plant open at its current level of employment. In addition to the Wrangler, the Toledo plant also builds the Jeep Cherokee. Marchionne has committed to keeping Wrangler production in the United States.
The Grand Cherokee and the Jeep Wrangler are Jeep’s two best-selling brands. The automaker is expected to sell about a million Jeeps this year, up 37 percent from 2013. Jeep currently sells about 15,000 Wranglers per month. Jeep has seen a significant improvement in its fortunes, in recent years, as the economy has recovered and as Chrysler’s partnership with Fiat has breathed new life into the company.
