One of the great joys of owning a Jeep is taking it off-road on the trails and fields of New Jersey. Off-roading is great fun, but, for inexperienced drivers, it can be risky. Understanding off-roading safety is important before you take your Jeep on the trail.

Butler Jeep dealers in New Jersey offer the following tips for safe off-roading:

·         Rollovers are one of the biggest threats to motorists who enjoy taking their Jeeps and other four-wheel drive vehicles off-road. Thousands of people are injured each year in rollovers related to off-roading in automobiles and other all-terrain vehicles.

·         To avoid rollovers, be sure to know the limits of your vehicle, and also be cautious in your off-roading. If you don’t think you can go over or around it, just turn back. It’s not worth the risk of harm to yourself and your vehicle. A good rule of thumb is to avoid driving diagonally when on the trail.

·         It should go without saying that operating any vehicle isn’t compatible with drinking. However, some off-roaders may feel that, if they’re not on a road, rules about drinking and driving shouldn’t apply. If anything, strictures against drinking and driving should be even more closely observed when off-roading, primarily because the terrain is more tricky, and the chance of a rollover or other accident may be higher. Bottom line: If you’re going off-roading, leave the alcohol at home.

·         Taking your time on the trail is important. Going slowly will give you the time you need to find the best path forward and will also give you the time needed to react to changes in terrain, such as rocks or logs. Taking it slow will also cause less damage if you scrape bottom on something on the trail.

·         Keeping your eyes on the way ahead is also important. Be sure to look past what’s immediately in front of you, to avoid getting stuck in a quagmire, or going over a hill or a steep incline that your vehicle can’t handle.

·         It’s also an excellent idea to reduce your vehicle’s tire pressure before going off-roading. Lower tire pressure increases your Jeep’s traction on terrain such as gravel or sand.

·         If you’re going off-roading, it’s worthwhile to take a friend with you. If you’re in an accident, a passenger may be able to go for help if you become incapacitated.

·         It may also be worthwhile to take a driver’s safety course specializing in off-roading safety. Several organizations throughout the country offer driver’s safety courses, and quite a few of them have classes teaching safe off-roading skills.
