Nothing makes a statement like driving a sporty vehicle around Bloomingdale, Kinnelon, or Butler. Harkening back to the heyday of the muscle car, both the Dodge Charger and the Ford Mustang are back for 2015 to continue the debate of who's king of the road. Let's take a look at what each has to offer.
Drivetrain and Engine
The engine is probably one of the most important things about these cars and the 2015 Dodge Charger doesn't disappoint. All of the available engines power an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Charger has four options to consider.
First is the 3.6-liter V6 engine that puts out 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. While it's enough to get the Charger going, most enthusiasts are going to want a little more bang for their buck.
The next option is the 5.7-liter V8 engine. It clocks in at 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque. Moving up in the V8s, there's a 6.4 liter that puts out 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The extra horsepower doesn't cost much at the pump, as there's only a 1 mpg combined loss between the 5.7- and the 6.4-liter engines.
Finally, the Charger has the option of a massive 6.2-liter supercharged V8. This bad boy is capable of a whopping 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Of course, this comes with an upgrade to the transmission to handle the extra torque.
The Ford Mustang clocks in with more reserved, yet still respectable, stats. The standard engine for the Mustang is a 3.7-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. Moving into the V8 direct, the GT has a 5.0-liter V8. This engine puts out 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Either of these engines can be paired with a six-speed automatic engine with paddle shifters or a six-speed manual transmission.
In a surprising move, Ford decided to put a four-cylinder turbocharged option in the 2015 Mustang. The 2.3-liter V4 uses the Ford EcoBoost system to put out 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.
Trims and Body Styles
As you would expect of the Charger, there are quite a few body styles available. There are seven trims overall, with a myriad of add-ons for choosing. Options such as a sport-tuned transmission, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, active exhaust, and a sunroof are all available.
Technology isn't spared either, with rear cameras, lane keeping and sensing, cross-traffic alerts, power title, and power adjust pedals only scratching the surface of the options you can choose from.
The Mustang offers both a coupe and a convertible option. Each of the body styles comes in six trim levels. Options include 18-inch alloy wheels, suspension upgrades, Brembo brakes on the manual transmission, plus additional bracing and gauges. Technology packages including all of Ford's latest safety and infotainment systems can be combined with upper level packages.
